Description:

This presentation examines the psychological effects of vaping from an evidence-based psychiatric perspective. It reviews the neurobiology of nicotine dependence, including effects on the developing adolescent brain and reward circuitry. Key epidemiological findings are presented: adolescent and young adult vapers demonstrate significantly elevated rates of depression, anxiety, suicidality, and cognitive impairment compared to never-users, with dual users at highest risk. The bidirectional relationship between mental health problems and vaping initiation is explored, alongside the clinical challenge of differentiating primary psychiatric illness from nicotine withdrawal and intoxication states. Withdrawal symptoms—including dysphoria, anxiety, agitation, and cognitive difficulties—frequently mimic or exacerbate underlying mood and anxiety disorders, risking misdiagnosis. Practical clinical implications are emphasized: comprehensive substance-use assessment, recognition of high-risk patterns, psychoeducation about the paradox of vaping for stress relief, and appropriate referral thresholds. The presentation equips homeopathic practitioners with evidence-based frameworks for identifying, counseling, and collaboratively managing patients affected by vaping-related psychological complications.
