Presentation Title: A Missed Opportunity? Understanding the Early Recognition of
Cerebral Palsy
Early recognition of cerebral palsy has the potential to improve outcomes for both
children and their families by facilitating timely referral and access to evidence-based
intervention during a critical period of neurodevelopment. Despite advances in early
identification, opportunities for earlier recognition continue to be missed.
Using a real clinical case as the foundation for discussion, this presentation explores
current evidence surrounding the early recognition of cerebral palsy, highlights key
developmental red flags, and examines the role of validated assessment tools in
identifying children at high risk. The clinical and family implications of delayed
recognition are considered, together with the importance of effective communication
and multidisciplinary collaboration.
This session aims to equip clinicians with practical insights to recognise when further
assessment or referral is warranted, ultimately supporting earlier intervention and
improved outcomes for children at risk of cerebral palsy.
